The Britannia on Allen Street is so called as it was once part of the Britannia Brewery which was built in 1834 by Edward Herrington and William Wells who also built the pub at the same time calling it the Britannia Brewery Tap.
The top of the brewery building was dominated by a figure of Britannia looking up Allen Street.
After changing it's name to William Wells and Co. in 1873, sadly the brewery went bankrupt in 1902, and after a brief period of prosperity, the brewery collapsed in 1924 and was bought out by Young & Co.'s Brewery plc.
Allen Street is named after Thomas Allen, a property developer who, in 1817, promoted building in the area of Kensington in order to ensure some sort of unity during a time of fast growing development.
